Missy Elliott is set to host the HBCU Battle of the Bands at Norfolk State.
Missy Elliott is using her own experiences with anxiety, depression and childhood struggles to encourage people to be more honest about their mental health.
The hip-hop icon reflected on her personal journey in a 2023 cover story, explaining how a difficult period in her life changed the way she viewed vulnerability. Rather than feeling pressure to appear strong at all times, Elliott said she has learned that acknowledging difficult emotions is simply part of being human.
Missy Elliott Says It’s OK to Have Difficult Days
Elliott, whose career has made her one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, spoke candidly about mental health while discussing her life and career.
The rapper recalled going through a particularly challenging period more than a decade earlier, around the time she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition. The experience helped her recognize that she did not always need to present herself as having everything under control.
“I’m fine with being like, ‘Hey, I got anxiety’ or ‘I went through depression,’” Elliott said.
She emphasized that emotional struggles are not limited to celebrities or people facing extraordinary circumstances. In her view, everyone can experience difficult periods, regardless of their career or public image.
“Even the biggest artist, or just the regular everyday working person, we all go through s—,” she said. “And it’s OK to say, ‘Hey, I’m not OK today.’”
For Elliott, being open about those feelings can also create opportunities for people to support one another instead of suffering in silence.
Why Being Vulnerable Matters to Her
The rapper suggested that greater honesty about mental health could strengthen relationships because people would feel less afraid of being judged when they are struggling.
She explained that someone having a difficult day might simply need understanding and encouragement rather than criticism. Elliott also acknowledged that people can sometimes experience troubling thoughts or emotions that they do not necessarily know how to discuss.
Her message was ultimately about making space for those conversations.
By admitting that she has experienced anxiety and depression herself, Elliott has shown that vulnerability does not contradict strength. Instead, she sees acknowledging those experiences as part of accepting herself.
That perspective appears to have developed through years of personal reflection and life experience.
Elliott Also Reflected on Childhood Anxiety
Elliott connected some of her adult experiences with emotions and memories from childhood.
Looking back, she said she believes some difficult experiences from her younger years were never fully addressed at the time. Like many people, she found herself thinking more deeply about her past during the COVID-19 pandemic, when everyday routines were disrupted and many people had more time alone with their thoughts.
“I think that a lot of things were brushed up under the rug for me growing up, and probably also for a lot of people,” she said.
The period of reflection brought childhood memories and emotions back to the surface.
Rather than viewing those experiences as something that diminishes her, Elliott offered a different perspective: they are part of what makes her human.
“But that’s what makes me human,” she said.
A Career Built Through Persistence
Elliott’s openness about personal challenges comes alongside a career defined by determination.
Born Melissa Arnette Elliott, she established herself as a rapper, songwriter and producer whose innovative approach helped reshape mainstream hip-hop. Her success also came in an industry where women frequently faced significant barriers.
In 2023, Elliott explained that her motivation to succeed was deeply connected to her family.
After a fan asked what inspired her persistence in a male-dominated music industry, she pointed to the women who had come before her as well as her mother.
Elliott recalled witnessing her mother experience an abusive relationship while she was growing up. She said that seeing her mother’s circumstances motivated her to pursue a career that could eventually give her family greater security.
Her determination became an important part of the story behind her success.
The motivation was not simply about becoming famous. Elliott described wanting to build a career that would allow her to help her mother and change their circumstances.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Honor Marked Another Milestone
Elliott’s reflections on her personal journey came during an especially significant period in her career.
In 2023, she was selected for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, becoming eligible for the honor in her first year of eligibility. The recognition placed her among an elite group of artists whose influence has extended well beyond individual songs or albums.
She was scheduled to be inducted on Nov. 3, 2023, alongside performers including Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.
For Elliott, the achievement carried particular meaning because of the women and artists who had influenced her along the way.
She described the honor as something she never expected to receive, while also acknowledging the hard work behind her career.
Her comments reflected a balance that has become central to her story: celebrating a major professional accomplishment while remaining honest about the personal struggles that existed behind it.
Missy Elliott’s Message Goes Beyond Music
Elliott’s comments about mental health offered another side of a performer often associated with confidence, creativity and an unmistakable stage persona.
Her willingness to acknowledge anxiety, depression and unresolved childhood experiences highlights an important distinction between public success and private wellbeing. A person can achieve major professional milestones while still experiencing difficult emotions.
That is also why her message about saying “I’m not OK” resonated beyond the music industry.
Elliott’s career has earned her widespread recognition, but her own words make clear that success does not eliminate the ordinary struggles that people face. Her advice is less about pretending everything is fine and more about creating an environment where people can admit when it isn’t.
As she reached one of the biggest milestones of her career, Elliott was also reminding fans that strength can include vulnerability—and that acknowledging difficult days does not make someone any less successful.
