Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling had previously worked together, including on the 2018 film A Wrinkle in Time. Their professional relationship made Kaling familiar with Witherspoon and her family.
Kaling later explained that Witherspoon had told her Deacon was interested in performing. When the show’s team was developing the third season, they had a role that seemed appropriate for him.
That conversation eventually led to Deacon being considered for Parker.
